Guest Speaker: Ben Koe // Wed // 1030hrs // LT4.13

Ben KoeAs mentioned earlier, Benjamin Koe (Hill & Knowlton Senior Associate & New Media Specialist) will be our guest speaker this Wednesday, from 10.30 to 11.30am, at LT4.13 (Ben will begin at 10.40am).

Ben will be speaking from experience about “Public Relations & Online Communities”, which should appeal to those of you interested in how corporate communication works in online social networks. Do take notes at his talk as online communities will be the topic for next week.

Benjamin Koe works at Hill & Knowlton in Singapore as a PR consultant in the technology practice as well as the company’s new media specialist. This is where he explores the marriage of Public Relations and the social media.

More notably, Ben also co-founded and built Scoopasia.com, a free web resource for the PR and marketing industry in Asia.

Through his blog, The eOK .network, Ben shares a view of the world around him through the lens of a public relations practitioner.

His presentation will be available later for download.

Update: Since this takes up the 2nd COM125 lecture for the week, there won’t be regular COM125 classes this week. 🙂

Kevin… as u know some of us have class from 9-1030. would try to leave earlier if possible for the speaker session….

Benjamin: Thanks you for sharing. I’m aware of this and have discussed with some students to have the guest speaker start at 10.40am, while I discuss class admin issues in the first 10mins at 10.30am.

Remember that this session only lasts for an hour, so there isn’t much time I can push further. Hopefully 10mins is enough time for everyone to get seated. I don’t wish to give our speaker a hard time by having students constantly drop-in.

Understand that I’m doing everything I can to make classes interesting, and I can only work with the time allotted to me by the program for a guest speaker. Once again, I’m accommodating as much of your needs as possible, without sacrificing too much face-to-face time in class.

Do approach me if you have better suggestions, such as finding a better time slot for a combined COM125 class.

so is there class on thursday??

  4. theory says:

Liyana: No class on Thursday (see update in the post).

  5. Wong Renhao says:

Does that mean we go right on with 242 after the talk? If that is so, we die leh. Elaine’s make up class is right after yours at 1pm, meaning we have no lunch till 230!! x_x

  6. theory says:

Renhao: Thanks for sharing, but I think you guys will have to figure it out for yourselves.

First, students need to come in late for the talk, now students need to leave early for lunch. This was the schedule I was given, so it’s absolutely insane that I’ve to keep cutting down my class time just to make way for others. There has to be a compromise by other instructors as well, so discuss this with them.

It’s becoming nonsensical for me to bring in future guest speakers if I’ve to keep dealing with this. One student today has even been rude to me about being late. Unless something magical happens, I’ll revert to regular classes for the rest of the semester.

  7. Wong Renhao says:

Yes I understand, we’ll work something out. 🙂
