Week 2: History of the Internet

While we cover blogs this week, this week’s mission will be on the readings for next week:

Blog assignment: History of the Internet
(Deadline: 27th Jan, Saturday, 5pm)

  1. Elaborate on a particular Internet technology from the year 1994 or earlier (e.g. newsgroups, IRC, email, hypertext),
  2. Present an argument on how the Internet you use today was influenced by this development.
  3. Cite supporting facts from your Internet history readings (as seen below and in your syllabus).
  4. Start the title of your blog post as “COM125 Week2: _____” so I know which post to grade.

Requirements
Blog entries should be around 700 words in length, and follow standard conventions of written US English, including APA-style citations.

Readings: History of the Internet
The history of the Internet extends further into the past than most people realize. Next week, we will discuss the origins of the Internet, its development over the past decades, and its current status.

  1. What happened? How come there are little exclamation marks on the feeds?

  2. theory says:

Good question: I believe that the blogger.com “blackout” was something experienced not just by our COM125A class today, but by the entire blogger.com community. Bloglines couldn’t access our blog rss feeds, which is why there are red exclaimation mark errors. It should be ok in a while.

  3. Oh.. nothing to be alarmed about then.

  4. Roshni Rawla says:

Is it ok to use other ources from the internet as well, in addition to the 3 required sources? thanks.

  5. jiayi says:

i am still kinda blur about the assignment. Do we just find a internet technology like example irc and talk indetail about it? and then using like example msn chat and talk about how irc affect it?

  6. theory says:

Roshni: You’re encouraged to find additional sources other than the ones I provided. That’s a mark of a good academic.

Jiayi: Here are some good ones submitted by Jonathan and Yepp. As with all academic papers, make sure to use proper English (i.e. watch for spelling and grammar).

  7. Benjamin Yap says:

Is it possible for me to talk about ICQ? It was only developed in 1996 though?

  8. Must we quote from the required sources? OR can we just use external sources like journals etc?

  9. Oh I meant required readings.

  10. theory says:

Benjamin Yap: You can. By picking a prior technology, you then explain how it lead to ICQ and more. See Jonathan’s excellent assignment for example.

Felicia Song: As I’ve explained to Roshni in the comment above, you can. In fact you are encouraged to find additional sources since my references are never exhaustive. If you find reliable sources, you can replace some of the readings I provided, but you’ll want to cite at least one of my related readings. 🙂

  11. Jerry Tan says:

  12. Benjamin Yap says:

  13. theory says:

Most of you are doing well, with some APA in-text citation and reference issues which I’ve highlighted as a comment on your individual blogs.

  28. Andrea Lim says:

Done. I met with a couple of obstacles on this assignment. I learned that if we do it in a Word doc first, its not as simple as just copying and pasting into our blog.

I also attempted to include a few images, but to no avail. Sigh. I feel so handicapped.

  29. Shamala says:

  40. Here is my assignment for week 2

  41. faithyy says:

    ok. its finally done.

  42. theory says:

As seen in the syllabus: “Late entries will not be graded”. Also, as seen in my presentation of 1st day, “Start Early, or Regret Later”. I’ve given fair warnings.

I’ve dedicated this week’s class teaching blogger.com, and even gave an extra day to complete this assignment. I cannot give any further exceptions. For those who had trouble with blogger.com and were later than 5pm today in my RSS reader, you will not be getting a grade this week.

  43. To Kevin:I did my assignment this morning (27 Jan,Sat), before lunchtime. However, i did not not leave a comment here after publishing the post. Just worried whether you have seen it as there were not comments left on my blog regarding the assignment. I believe you have a tracker that takes note of the time whenever a new blog post has been published, so i hope you did not overlooked my assignment and that i will not miss the grade as i made sure that the work was done before the Sat 5pm deadline.

  44. theory says:

Don’t worry Christabel, I have you on my RSS reader and it shows that you submitted early. Leaving a comment here is optional.

  45. Yong En says:

Dot….I didn’t know we must post a message claiming that we did our assignment,,,,Oh no….i just go back from a wedding dinner…and I finished my assignment this afternoon before 5! Mr Lim, i hope you have me on yr RSS feed as well so you’d know that I did my assignment on time….thank you, sorry for fogetting!

  46. Nashrin says:

I want to enquire about problems with blogger.com.
I have another blog, my personal one, but i changed to xanga due to my problems with blogger a few months back. Everytime I tried to publish anything, there would be an error message. I cannot publish or even save. But funnily enough, I could change the template and do almost everything else.
Now it’s still the same. I cant figure anyway around it except asking people to publish for me. Is there any other way to get it fixed? Could it be my internet connection?

  47. Andrea Lim says:

    Hi Kevin,

Was wondering if you’ve read my Week 2 assignment, cos I haven’t received a grade on it.
    Please advise.

    Thank you!
